I can't believe it's April and it's still so cold. I really feel like it's still winter while spring is almost over. Where is all the warm weather gone to? My vege plot is still pretty bear (I don't dare to get out the plants, for they sure will die in the cold nights. But I so want to start getting stuff in the ground. In stead I watch the garden guru of England (Alan Titchmarsh) who has a wonderfull episode on vegetable gardening in his series How to be a gardener. Really grand!
I think that this little fellow thinks that his birthday is coming early and that someone spread out lots of white bread crums everywhere you look.
Jee, what a weird weather we're having here, it now hailed considerably, I have pics to show for it: My sweet little first flowers of this year, I'm hoping they survive This is my path towards the middle of the garden...or should I say river :-)
I almost stepped on this little guy, well, little might be a big word... Apparently not heated through enough for his first flying lesson, so I put him in my bowl of lavender flowers, then he can at least smell the stuff he's going to hunt for his entire life. Keep safe mr. Bumblebee!
It is quite weird, but easter is even colder than Christmas! Nothing is growing outside, so lets get the sunshine in then!
Do you also find it hard to organize when you're going to plant what. Do you also discover in May that you should have sown something in March and it is far to late now to even bother. You might not have similar experiences when you have a plot not near your house and have friendly plot neighbors who will tell you what to plant and when to do so asked or unasked. But I need to have a system of my own that shall not fail me. And so I have devised a shoe box! Yes indeed a shoe box, in this box all weeks of the year are hanging like file folders neatly behind each other, with month cards every 4 or 5 weeks. In between the bags of seeds go, with neatly written on a separate paper in the front, how to sow (row spacings etc.) and where to sow (also shown in front of the shoe box, the separate squares in which the vegetables grow).
I'm pretty proud of the devised system. If it works well I'm going to sell my idea to a garden supplier like the Secrets du potager, and earn serious money :-) I've started some sowing already. Although it is not much, it is growing great. I've started with radishes, salads, tomatoes and cauliflower. I'm also making a dynamic sowing calendar, which will hopefully help me not to forget sowing seeds in the right time. You will hear about it in full, after it has had some test runs, to see if it wor
I always enjoy the first ladybug in the spring. I spotted this little lady in the woods just near my crocuses. Make lots of baby ladies, my little friend, so that you can take care of undesired pests for me.
I have a weak heart for poppies, but I can't help myself, even dried they look pretty. It was a hard decision to make, but in the end I decided to remove this red cabbage plant from the soil. Since spring last year he took residence in my garden, but never developed a hint of something that looked like the start of a cabbage. And so he now must leave this place. I hope the worms in my compost bin will like him. Except for the strawberries that will get a new home in April, all crops have been removed from the garden. The soil has been fed, ready for a new growing season. I can't
Finally, spring is trying to break through to the cold dark days of winter. I decided to dig up my carrot patch, so that I can prepare that piece of land for a new sowing season. Sometimes it is a blessing to have such a sandy soil like I have. Because my carrots keep perfectly well under the sand during the cold winter months. I laughed out loud when I pulled up some of my carrots, they have such a funny shapes sometimes. Last year I planted more then a 100 flower bulbs, look at them go! And I discovered that I already get visited by my best friends, the lady bugs, hello there my little fellows!
