Here is another garden update from the Dutch homestead. My little garden girl is doing lovely. New produce is arriving. Beans are looking good!
It's looking like spring again, see how wet everything is. No fun. I don't like not being able to get outside. Stop dropping water upon us you clouds!
I got lavender of a very special kind for my birthday. They are looking swell, but I must say that they do change a bit in color after you have them for a while (the bright purple reduces a bit). See my stone chicken on my kitchen table, got that as well from a
I never had so many strawberries as I have this year. They are really looking lovely and crisp. Especially when covered in the mornings dew.
I've also made a rooster in the cage, so they can sit on there if they feel like it as well. They do like to make a mess of the food I give them, immediately they try to whip it from the plate into the straw and sand. It probably taste better like that.
I've purchased my very own chickens today. A long wish that came through. I had the chicken house for over a year now. I did my research well and purchased 3 Wyandottes chickens, they are really great. They're called Kwik, Kwek and Kwak (named after the nephew ducks from Donald Duck). Kwik is the fair brown one, furthest away. Kwek is the black one, who's always gently chatting to me. Kwak is the white and black striped, that has sadly just one feather left into his bottom. They are settling in quite nicely. Kwek, the black one is the curious lady, she already layed one egg 15 minutes after arrival. I was a bit worried (after I heard here making noises like a rooster), that she was of the male breed, but she definitely proved me wrong.
I've placed the tomatoes in a self watering container as well. They are always so thirsty, and so I thought this would be the best way to prevent wilting plants. And yes, I know it is not a radish, but the sign is there so I can place a bag over the containers at night, without snapping the fragile tops of
I like my little signs I made last year out of wine crates. They stay pretty well, and I finally know what's what, and that is a great bonus. My boy gnome is still sitting on bare land, but he's found his little bird for company, so he's okay.
My apple is blooming. I still don't know where to place it so it is standing in a container. But he seems not to mind, seeing the abundance of beautiful flowers. My strawberries are doing good as well. If I have as many strawberries as I have flowers I sure will be in heaven. From Alan Titchmarsh I learned that the best thing in spring would probably be the first pea right out of the bean. I never grew peas before, but I'm sure willing to try. I do find their growing methods already quite enchanting. I have no idea what to sow in the cold frame, but I have devised a new way of filling it. You see, the cold frame I have is made out of an old window from my parents house. It is 1 x 1 meter, and so a lot of ground inside. I don't want to buy multiple bags of compost soil to fill it, but it needs filling, for the ground inside is very poor. And so I was thinking, why shall I not fill it with compost from my own compost bin. Well you probably say; duh, why don't you. Well, the trouble is that I have no real compost, you still see the leaves there. I don't know know what I'm doing wrong, but it is not real earth by far. But for the contained cold frame that doesn't matter. I'm going to grow pumpkins there, for they seem to like compost anyway. I've placed my garden gnomes outside recently. Isn't she looking lovely.

AuthorHi, I'm Bregtje. Here you can find me with my head up side down in the garden. But I also can be found with my head in a newly home made cupboard or above the kitchen stove or even between piles of paper, sticking stuff in arty albums and brushing away with paint! And now I'm developing a new hobby to add to my ever growing project list: blogging about it all! Please find my Garden blog, Kitchen blog, Homemaking blog and Arts blog here! Archives
